How to Make a Preliminary Base

How to Make a Preliminary Base

Learn how to make a preliminary base in order to fold cranes, fish and other origami figures that begin with this base.

Step 1 Place the paper on a table with the top side (or colored side) facing down. Make a valley fold through the horizontal middle. Crease the paper and unfold.

Step 2

Make a valley fold through the vertical center of the paper, crease and unfold.

Step 3

Flip the paper over so the colored side is facing up. Rotate it so the corners are pointed up/down and to the sides.

Step 4

Make a diagonal fold, pulling the bottom point up to the top point. Crease firmly and unfold.

Step 5

Make a second diagonal fold, bringing the left point over to the right point. Crease and unfold.

Step 6

Grab the paper by the top and bottom points, meeting them together below the paper. Your origami paper should look like the slide photograph.

Step 7

Next, pull the other two sides down at the same time. The creases you made previously will help the sides collapse correctly.

Step 8

The preliminary base shape is that of a square when you are finished. It is sometimes known as the square base for this reason.

After you learn how to make a preliminary base, you can use it to form the origami bird base or move onto making more origami folds for bases.
